Meet Charleigh

Wrigley Grace has been begging for a dog for quite some time now. I've had my eye out. We've been to almost every pet store within a 50 mile radius BUT being the animal lover that I am I couldn't imagine paying hundreds of dollars for a dog when there were perfectly good ones in shelters and worse yet "the pound"! At church last week a friend casually mentioned that the local animal shelter had a few shih tzu type dogs so after school on Tuesday we scooted on over to the shelter. Mistake #1 - I should have went alone while the kids were at school. So anyway we got to meet three little doggies that fit the description of what we were looking for and Wrig instantly feel in love with Peanut Butter and the feeling was mutual. Peanut Butter crawled up on Wrigley's lap and that's where she stayed. While Maddux and I toured the shelter looking at the kittens, other dogs and puppies Wrig stayed put. Up until now I have been successful in saying NO to other "potential" dogs because frankly the dogs were in good homes......were being fed and cared for and were in no immediate danger of being put to sleep but Peanut Butter was a game changer. Wrig was adamant that we take this dog home....so at her persistence I started asking questions and found that this poor little pooch had been through so much. She's deaf and for the most part blind.....she lived with an animal hoarder and was matted with feces and urine among other things. She has 5 teeth and through all of this she is still the sweetest little thing. I asked if they would be willing to reduce the cost of her adoption because I knew she would need immediate vet care and the girl asked Wrig just how bad she wanted Peanut Butter to live with her......through tears Wrig says "more than anything"! With that the lady gave us the dog on the condition that we know that if we decided we didn't want her the shelter was planning on putting her to sleep. I understand their thinking but I was horrified because this little girl has a lot of sass and she has many more years of love left in her. I made a vet appointment for her and we had some things confirmed....first she's 13 years old......she is totally deaf and mostly blind....she has 5 teeth that need to come out soon because they are rotten so she will have to eat wet food the rest of her life. She's pretty healthy for her age and after they shaved her at the vet she looks like a new dog. She barks when she wants something so she fits in perfectly. She snores rather loudly (she's actually snoring as I'm typing this) and Lucky loathes her. She's trusting and gentle and although she's had a hard life she is still joyful and jubilant in all her actions! I know she's happy and I'm so glad our paths crossed with Peanut Butter AKA Charleigh! We hope she lives many more happy years here with us as we're already in love with her! Welcome to your forever home peanut!
